"Vivah" yakhran
Sitting at my place in London alone, I used to often wonder when I ll walk down the isle of Heathrow airport to board plane to Mumbai and reunite with my family. I may haven t grown up in joint family but am much attached to my cousins, uncles and aunties. That s the reason I was hell eager to watch Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah. Having respect for his vision of entertainment made for family viewing eased me to take my parents alongwith to this movie trip. This was the final angle of pentagon woven by Sooraj Barjatya.
Considering, his mega opus launch “Maine Pyar Kiya”, the creativity of director couldn’t be challenged. But the belief of his creativity fell flat on face while watching the fourth angle of pentagon, “ Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon” . An epiphany struck me that one should not change the tracks he walk on until he/she is sure of the short cut reaching the goal , otherwise it would be……….
Anyways, with this mixed reactions and expectations I sat in not so comfortable chair of multiplex at a show time when I prefer to be in bed after good dinner that I had at my aunt s place. Just to add words it was a nice Gujrati dinner with sweet bread called puranpoli shared by Marathi tradition and added upon Surati Undhiu . The tradition was not broken, when characters were introduced. Khadus chachi who is more concerned about her daughter applying Fair and Lovely cream then what’s cooking in kitchen immediately placed me in one of Ekta Kapoor’s soap. With not even pinch of pun intended I love and admire Ekta Kapoor, the success rewrites her. The mention was necessary as Vivah was amalgam of Ekta Kapoor s soap and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
Anupam Kher being techno dad in this 19th century film and educating his younger son , Shahid about marriage and gals while he has studied in apna Dubya ,s des wid puff of Malboro and dates with a supersexy girl who hasn’t been shown just murmered by Prem aka Shahid when He introduces him to extra shy Amrita who speaks Hindi suddher then shudh Amul ghee. Saccharine content goes up along the script seeing techniques of reducing cold and gaining success at international level just on a phone call away that to from/to Mdhavpur , place unheard by me so please excuse me residents of town. Missing from story was a twist which was added in the rear half and was as low as the mumrmurs of Shahid or dialogues of Amrita throught out the film. Irony of the story is its title Vivah which we all longed to see Sooraj’s style was missing but the Engagement was highlight for the day. Courtship was main play which the director fiddled with. In all it was diabetic movie for selected audience who believe in 19th century values in 21st century Reliance age. Attaboy, seeing opening record of film I must admit Soorajji like Ekta know what we are starving of and have delivered that. To confess in conclusion, I did enjoy movie but in different way………
