Global Warming: A warning

Global War(m)ning
The essays in the board exams since my school days had topics like ‘If there was no Electricity’ or ‘Effects of Deforestation’ or ‘A day without natural resources’. The common thought was why ask such dumb topics to comment on??!! But, little did we know that our mere ignorance of facts at that time could be a source of black out for our progenies to come. The U.N. report on world weather working from 6 years stunned world by quoting that humans are responsible for Global warming. They also issued a statutory warning that if this continues it would be soon that world will face huge consequences of it leading to exhaustion of energy sources and major climate hazards.
Year of 2006 was recorded as hottest summer I 100 years everywhere in world and in winter also dipped to extremes. Besides the temperatures the water also responded by Tsunami in South East Asia, Floods in major part of world that are not use to such heavy rains. The ozone layer is thinning causing Ultraviolet rays to penetrate and thereby releasing increased rate of Skin cancer. Mother Earth also cannot bear the hazards caused by us, the snow is melting all over causing rise in sea level and soon to cover the land occupied by us. Earthquakes and volcanoes have increased in number. Nature is at maximum risk with areas of forest thinning as size of fashion models and animals getting disappeared as human values in today’s world.
Time has come to take action before its too late and we don have light to visualize our deeds. Saving the energies is not only the answer but even repairing damage done to the Earth. To set a few examples lets all start planting trees in our habitats, surviving without eating animals that are close to extinction. The job is now in our hands to prevent our tomorrow and preserve today for better present of our fruits. So lets begin…….to stop the criminalization of nature.

Conservationists have been working to stop the deforestation of rain forests in the Amazon, in large part because in burning the forests they add to the carbon load in the atmosphere and reduce the ability of the forests to sequester carbon. Now here at home, the “Healthy Forest Act” has begun mass deforestation in our western states. The HFA encourages communities and the Forest Service to cut and burn forest at an unprecedented rate.

In a series of projects, 63,000 acres of untouched forest above Santa Fe NM will be cut and burned to reduce the tree population from a current 1000 trees per acre to 40 to 60 trees per acre.

So far 7000 acres have been cut in the Santa Fe watershed, leaving only 40 to 60 full grown trees per acre, and slashing and burning all the smaller trees and undergrowth. This spring the Forest Service plans to begin burning and cutting another 1800 acres along Hyde Park Road, the first stage of 63000 acres to be cut in the next few years.

It’s well established that forests are a large part of the earth’s natural resistance to the rising levels of carbon being put into our atmosphere by our industrial civilization. This work is mainly done buy the young fast growing trees in a forest, not the fully grown trees nearing the end of their life cycle.

The Forest Service will cut and burn 90% of the trees, mostly the young ones, vastly reducing the forest’s ability to sequester carbon, while adding to the carbon load in our atmosphere with smoke from thousands of acres of burning forest.

The “Healthy Forests Act” is a give-a-way to the fire industrial complex. It pays millions to those who supply produce the equipment, supplies and manpower to cut the forests and fight fires. They say it’s goal is to reduce fire danger, but in cutting, and burning 90% of the trees, they will increase global warming and global warming will add to the fire danger. It’s a positive feedback loop.

Projects like this are either underway or proposed in forests all over the country. The effects on global warming of deforestation of this magnitude haven’t been studied, yet we blindly go on cutting and burning 3 to 4 million acres every year.

We at OnceAForest.org are a small group working to stop deforestation and devastation here in our NM forests. We need all the help we can get.

Thanks for any help you can give,
Sarah Williams

Good pots. We must be responsable for our actions and be conscious that only our behaviour could save ourselves.
Interesting that you have posted it here because I was just about to ask in my blog: " do you tur off the water while you brush your theeth?"
